Saturday Night Fever is a coming of age film about a nineteen year old, Tony Manero (John Travolta) who
dances through clubs in Brooklyn searching for a better life. Friends, girls, and the nightlife are quite
appealing but maybe thats not enough. Together with Stephanie (Karen Lynn Gorney), they prepare for a
dance contest which leads from one to another. But as things fall out of place, he realizes that he could
start anew and turn his life around.

The musical score, choreography, and their outfits were probably the highlight of this film for me. Of
course when you think of the seventies you think of discos, pants that flared at the hems and groovy
music. Songs such as How Deep Is Your Love and Disco Inferno were two of the songs that Ive been
hearing from my parents cassettes while growing up, so the soundtrack wasnt totally foreign. Also,
capturing the flashy lights in the club added to the whole seventies vibe.

As for the characters, I felt like there was no depth. By the end of the movie, I still didnt know who or what
they really were. There could have been a lot more done in the duration of 2 hours besides dancing and
portraying machismo. All I concluded was that they were misogynists with lack of better things to do.
Instead of being ignorant throughout the film, Tony Manero however, was able to redeem himself when he
accepted that pushing himself on Stephanie was wrong of him and went back to apologize in hopes of
repairing their friendship.

Whether you miss the seventies, or want to have a feel of what it was like back then, this is the movie for
you. Bee Gees, discos, and polyester pants, Saturday Night Fever is one of those films that would just
take you back to the past. I may not have been born yet during this period but that doesnt mean I couldnt
appreciate what they had to offer. It does contain vulgar languages and scenes so you might want to get a
clean version if you would be watching it with a younger audience.
