Research Question:

How to specify the limits of quality requirements to develop a

low cost and yet a highly efficient software system ?
Answer:
To determine the limits of quality requirements, the method of Quality-Impact Inquiry
can be adopted. The inquiry cycle is a 4 step process and is applied iteratively until
the stakeholders are satisfied from the quality attribute under investigation. The 4
steps include:
1.

2.

3.

4.

Preparation : The prototype of software is prepared and documentation is done.

Certain stake holders will then be asked to answer a questionnaire which would be
based on the experience of a quality attributes of the prototype software. The quality
attribute of the prototype will be further tailored based on these responses.
Measurement : The measurement of the stake holders experience of the software
product is done with help of a pre defined ratings/scores provided by the user in
response to a questionnaire which can be translated in to quality impacts of an
attribute.
Analysis : A statistical analysis of the stake holders experience about the quality
impact collected in the previous step is done. The measured quality and the quality
impact is correlated using a regression model. Using the reverse regression model the
quality value for a given quality impact is evaluated.
Decision making : In this final step, the desired levels of quality for the attributes are
identified using the analysis result. Software requirement specification are then
modified based on the decision . This process identifies the maximum applicable
quality impact based on
technical feasibility, product strategies and resource
limitation .
