John Crane Engineered Bearings Service Solutions

The John Crane Engineered Bearings Edge

John Crane Engineered Bearings Service Solutions can make a big difference in the way your
rotating equipment performs. Our only business is servicing our customers needs for the repair
and manufacture of bearings and seals for turbomachinery, either in-kind or customized to your
operation. For over 20 years, John Crane Engineered Bearings responsive service and engineering
skill have given customers in the petrochemical, refining and power generation industries the
engineering edge for their rotating equipment.
Why are John Crane products and services so important to you now? Take a look at your major business concerns
competition, customer demands, operating costs, fewer people doing more work, and increased environmental and safety
regulations. In some way, the efficiency and reliability of your turbomachinery affects all of these issues. More than ever, you
need maximum performance from your maintenance expenditures.

John Crane Quality is a Major

Component of Every One of Our
Products

John Crane Engineered Bearings

Service Solutions Proves to Be a Major
Utility Industry Player

Since you have many daily problems to solve, you should

not have to worry about the quality of your turbomachinery
parts. We recognize that reliability and machine uptime are
key objectives for our customers, and our philosophy is to
ensure that every product leaving our facility is designed and
manufactured to support these needs.

We have played an expanding role in the power generation

industry, delivering superior service and products for
many major utility providers. Our experience ranges from
upgrading sleeve bearings to tilting pad journal bearings in
boiler feed pumps at many nuclear stations to revitalizing
a 1,150-MW turbine generator set with tilt pad journal
bearings. Weve also used polymer wear-ring technology
in boiler feed pumps and upgraded thrust bearings in gas
turbines.

With this in mind, we have developed a rigorous qualitycontrol process that ensures strict adherence to engineering
guidelines, from the quotation stage to shipment. Our
quality-control team has final say over the fitness of
materials, components and assembled products at every
stage of manufacture. At our facilities, nothing ships until
our quality-control team says it can.

John Crane has provided quick turnaround repairs for all

types of bearings and seals, including supporting a major
utility supplier with a rush repair on a critical gas turbine
unit. The bearing was removed, repaired and ready to
re-install in just three days. Our fast response helped to
avoid additional downtime and associated costs from an
extended outage. So whether you need quick turnaround
repairs, solutions to bearing and seal-related problems, or
increased efficiency of your rotating equipment, we have the
power to help.

Innovation is a Big Part of Our Engineering Edge

It would be very easy to help our customers maintain their plants by simply performing only direct replacements of bearings
and seals. But that is not our philosophy. Customers return to John Crane for help with their turbomachinery because we
look at things differently, finding new, more cost-efficient ways to tackle old problems. Here are just a few examples:
How often have you heard about, or been faced with, high thrust-bearing temperatures that ultimately lead to unscheduled
maintenance or more frequent overhauls? John Crane regularly designs solutions for existing bearings that are used in all
types of turbomachinery. Satisfied customers report significant increases in uptime and decreases in maintenance costs.
One common problem we hear about is poor thrust-bearing performance in several of the most popular single-stage
turbines. We solved this one some time ago by designing a drop-in conversion kit that reduces maintenance costs by
extending the mean time between overhauls.

Optimizing Thrust-Bearing
Performance

Reducing Bearing Temperatures

The original bearing was a rolling element thrust bearing

that was not capable of handling high thrust loads. This
upgraded, drop-in replacement bearing requires only a
keyway to be cut in the shaft, allowing the customer to run
for many years instead of just months before replacement
is required.

Utilizing copper pads, an offset pivot and a ball-and-socket

design, we were able to drop the bearing temperature and
upgrade a non-equalized thrust bearing without having to
do costly machine modifications.

If you have had a situation or two like these yourself, or if you think youre facing something completely different, contact us
to find out how we can support your needs. Let our spirit of innovation pay off for you.
