PAEDIATRIC NEUROLOGY

PEARLS & PERILS

PSEUDOSEIZURES (NON EPILEPTIC SEIZURES)
-Epileptic and non epileptic seizures often coexist in the same patient.
-Urinary incontinence is an unsatisfactory discriminating feature because it occurs in up to 20%
of patients with non epileptic seizures.
-Some frontal lobe seizures present with ictal manifestations similar to classic non epileptic
seizures eg bilateral motor activity with preserved consciousness, pelvic thrusting.
-Non epileptic seizures are real in the sense that they are the symptoms of real (psychiatric)
disease. Therapy is aimed at uncovering the underlying psychological aetiology and teaching the
child coping skills. In evaluating non epileptic seizures, always rule out physical and sexual
abuse.
-In most cases, video-EEG monitoring (where available), is necessary to diagnose non epileptic
seizures.
