ORGANIC MICROPROCESSOR ON PLASTIC FOIL

ABSTRACT

40

years

after

the

first

silicon

microprocessors,

an

8-bit

microprocessor made from plastic electronic technology directly

fabricated on flexible pl ast i c foil is demonstrated. The opera tion
speed is currently limited to 40 instructions per second, the power
consumption is as low as 100W.
The organic microprocessor is implemented as two different foils an
arithmetic and logic unit and an instruction foil. The ALU-foil operates
at a supply of 10V and a back-gate voltage of 50V.

The

microprocessor can execute user defined programs with the help of

instruction foil which generates sequence of appropriate instructions.
The near transparency, mechanical flexibility

and low power

consumption of the processor are attractive features for integration on

everyday objects where it could be programmed as, amongst other
things, a calculator, timer or game controller.
