Stadium High School

Transition School (8th-9th Grade)


Summer 2013 Syllabus
This summer school course is designed for incoming 9th graders to give them additional support
in reading, writing and math to help better prepare them for success in high school. Instruction is
differentiated to meet the needs of the students. Enrollment is voluntary and the course is graded
Pass/Fail.
Students meeting passing criteria will have the opportunity to earn a .5 Elective Credit that can
be applied towards their high school graduation requirements.
Course Objectives:

To introduce students to high school policies and procedures


To introduce students to basic math skills in preparation for their freshmen math courses
To introduce students to reading and comprehension skills in preparation for their
freshmen English courses
To introduce students to writing and analytical skills in preparation for their freshmen
English courses

Grading:
Students will receive a Pass/Fail grade. Grades are based on attending at least 7 of the 8 days of
summer school, as well as successful completion of the criteria set for each subject area.
Math:

Geometry: I can apply basic geometry terms and understand basic postulates of
geometry.
Algebra: I can interpret meaning of graphs.
Algebra: I can create a scatter plot given a table of information.
Algebra: Pre-Test; I can interpret the meaning of points on graphs. ID: axes, axis, directly
proportional, y=kx, point of origin, and comparison of values, estimate placement
Algebra: I can create and interpret a scatter plot given a table of information. ID: interpret
data, + or correlation, work with partners, debug work and Post-Test.

Writing:

Complete all steps of the writing process (brainstorm, outline, rough draft, proofreading,
final draft)
Organize ideas clearly and effectively
Complete two typed, MLA format five paragraph essays and one in class timed write

Reading:

Read and annotate each of the required non-fiction articles for ethos, pathos and logos
Write the response paragraphs for each article
Participate in class discussions/presentations
