Subject: Chemistry

Grade Level: High School

TEK (s): C.8D use the law of conservation of mass to

write and balance chemical equations

Materials/Resources:
Computer and Projector, Balancing Chemical Equations
worksheet

Objective (Student Friendly):

Balancing chemical equations so we can move onto
stoichiometry.

Technology (incorporated in lesson):

Youtube video: Balancing Chemical Equations
www.youtube.com/watch?v=TUuABq95BBM

1. Big Understanding (Real World):

UNDERSTANDING THAT ATOMS OF REACTANTS MUST EQUAL ATOMS OF PRODUCTS.
STEPPING STONE FOR DOING STOICHIOMETRIC CALCULATIONS
2. Catch/Hook/Engage:
Who likes saving money? Balancing equations can save you money.if you are a chemist
Begin the class with a short video on how to balancing equations
3. Instructional Strategies / Student Activities
** Be sure to include any/all Grouping Patterns**
Teacher Input/Modeling: I will demonstrate balancing a chemical equation on the board.

Guided Practice: WE DO: I will than do a couple chemical equations on the board and have the class
walk me thru how to do it.
CFU (Checking for understanding): Students will work in table groups and I will give them a more
difficult equation to balance.
Independent Practice: YOU DO (Individual students): Students will be given worksheet to complete as
homework.

4.

Higher Level Questions to Incorporate:

Why do we need to balance chemical equations?
What are the steps of balancing the chemical equation?
Does anyone know where this reaction takes place in our world? (CO2 + H2O C6H12O6 + O2)

5.

6.

Ending, Summary / Reflection: I will ask the students that if they were chemists how balancing equations
can save them money?

Summative Assessment Evidence (remember you plan from this-backwards design):

I will collect their worksheets and grade them to see how well everyone has learned the lesson.
