I witnessed Six Americas: (There could be more!

1. There is the America of the top one per cent who Samuel
Huntington had called the “denationalised elite.” They need
America’s military power to secure their gains – four times of
the wealth of the bottom 80 per cent of the population of the
country (MR; Jul-August, ’06).

2. The American power elite (C. Wright Mills) who traverse the
Washington-New York beltway with the same ease they seek to
dominate the world.

3. The small corporate elite for whom Hollywood’s salesmanship

of the ‘American dream’ is inherently important for continued
accretion of their money, power and greed. Their income
differential with the average wage earner stood at 2,173:1 in
2000 (MR; Jul-Aug’06) Today, after eight years of Bush tax
breaks, the disparity is even higher and deeper.

4. The Vaunted American Middle Class, those who keep the

shopping malls crowded. For running a family of four with the
children in school and basic medi-care, it requires for the
couple to hold 3.7 jobs and a 16-hour work day. They find
refuge in religion.

5. Black and Latino America populates the jails of the USA and
the “informalised” economic life of post-Fordist America. For
them the “American dream” has died hard as they wallow in the
absence of education and healthcare. They too uphold faith on
god as the ultimate fall-back.

6. New Immigrants. They have been duped into believing that

they would find King Solomon’s Mines; and thus search for it
for the rest of their lifetime.

As they say, Leftism is against the

concept of American identity!
