ANALYSIS OF INTIMA MEDIA THICKNESS IN B-MODE ULTRASOUND

COMMON CAROTID ARTERY IMAGES

Atherosclerosis is responsible for a large proportion of cardiovascular diseases (CVD),

which are the leading cause of death in the world. The atherosclerotic process, mainly affecting
the medium- and large-size arteries, is a degenerative condition that causes thickening and the
reduction of elasticity in the blood vessels. The Intima-Media Thickness (IMT) of the
Common Carotid Artery (CCA) is a reliable early indicator of atherosclerosis. Usually, it is
manually measured by marking pairs of points on a B-mode ultrasound scan image of the CCA.
The previous method is based on automatic image segmentation procedure for the measurement
of the IMT, avoiding the user dependence and the inter-rater variability. A method for the
measurement of the brachial artery diameter has been developed. They present a system for
computing the brachial artery diameter in real-time by analyzing B-mode ultra-sound images.
The method is based on a robust edge detection algorithm which is used to automatically locate
the two walls of the vessel. But the Previous Method steps or more to Find the Carotid artery and
Measurement of IMT , Which results in less accuracy of finding artery. The proposed frame
incorporates the thresholding method because it can detect the carotid artery without blurring the
image. Before thresholding, the ultrasound image had to be changed to gray scale and do some
image processing. After that, the image needed to transform into binary image before
thresholding. After thresholding, the ultrasound image has to be removing some parts which are
not carotid artery and fill up some parts in the middle of the carotid artery. After all these steps,
the carotid artery can successfully be detected, and the Measurement of IMT is calculated
successfully.
