Objective:
The student will be introduced to space showing foreground and background.
The student will create a cityscape that reflects their knowledge of space, foreground, and background
demonstrating unity.

Higher order thinking:
Create a cityscape by combining foreground and background space that shows overall unity.
Instruction/Motivation relate prior knowledge have attention getting sentence to TIE into THEIR
life.

ASK four students to come up to front. Have one sit on stool, two stand in front of the one sitting on stool
and one sitting on the floor in front of the two standing. Ask what happened to the legs of the kids sitting on
stool and standing in front of stool? Are they still there? Yes, they are hidden because the other students are
overlapping them.
SHOW image of cityscapes.
DISCUSS how things are in front of others and how things overlap.
INTRODUCE overlapping, foreground, and background.
DEMONSTRATE IN STAGES 1. How to watercolor background sky. 2. How to draw oil pastel fireworks
that overlap in sky. 3. How to cut out rectangle shapes for buildings and glue to background overlapping. 4.
How to cut out triangle rooftops and glue to overlap on buildings. 5. How to cut out window shapes and glue
to buildings.
CREATE BY: 1. Paint sky background on 9x12 white paper using watercolor. 2. Draw fireworks using oil
pastels in sky overlapping them. 3. Cut out different size rectangle shapes from 6X12 black construction
paper for buildings. 4.Glue on background paper overlapping them. 4. Cut out triangle rooftops from black
construction paper scrapes and glue on buildings. 5. Cut out yellow or white squares and rectangles for
windows from 3x6 construction paper. 5. Glue on buildings.
WRAP UP (higher order goes here) Express with your neighbor how you created a cityscape using the
foreground, background, and overlapping to show unity.
Assessment: Did the student complete the project? Did they do a neat job? Does their art reflect the
lessons objectives?
Materials /Resources: 9 X 12 white paper, 6X12 black paper, 3x6 yellow or white paper, scissors, glue, oil
pastels, watercolor paint, paint brushes, water bowls, and water.
