The Relevance of Non-Violence Today

Non-violence is the most useful weapon in the

circumstances that we are confronted with. It was
preached and practiced by Mahavir and Buddha in
ancient times. It was practiced by Jesus Christ. Ashoka
also sought its shelter after the great massacre in the
war of Kalinga. But the relevance of non-violence is
really great in modern times. It is more relevant to us
than to, our ancestors.
Man is conversant with violence because he has animal
spirit in him. He has waged many battles and wars. He
has shed much blood of his fellowmen. He has
displayed his violent temper more often than not. But it
was okay in the days of yore rtwit). Today man cannot
indulge in swash- buckling.
The modern war has become very dangerous. All the
countries are equipped with lethal atomic weapons.
These weapons are sure to annihilate everyone and
everything on our planet. Mankind will become extinct.
All living objects will cease to be. Even green
vegetation will not be spared. What man has done for
centuries will undone in a matter of few days. It is true
that it takes many minds to make the world but it takes
only one mind to destroy it.
The earth will become deserted like Venus, moon and
mars. It will become barren and arid. The earth will
cease to be fit for life of any sort for ages and for good.
If we have disputes, let us arrive at amicable solution.
Let us be tolerant. We shall have to be tolerant with all
other people in the world. No nation can afford to solve
a dispute on the battlefield. Non-violence we shall have
to practice in the present day circumstances. Gandhijis
principle of non-violence is of immense value to us. We

cannot afford to be violent. Non-violence is the only

weapon that we shall have to use in our differences. Let
us remember that force does not solve any problem.
Let us be non-violent & tolerant in our relations to all.
