Austins Ride of Silence to be part of world-wide event

AUSTIN, Texas The eleventh annual Ride of Silence is set to take place on Wednesday May
20, 2015 in Austin, Texas and around the world. The ride honors cyclists that have lost their lives
or been injured while sharing the road with motorists.
Rides will also take place in over fifteen other countries including China, Italy, Brazil, Israel,
Canada and Sweden. The Ride of Silence originated in Dallas, Texas when Chris Phelan
organized 1,000 cyclists to ride in silence to honor his friend, Larry Schwartz, who was hit and
killed by a school bus mirror.
This is a ride for the heart. says Al Bastidas, Austin Ride of Silence organizer and Please BE
KIND to Cyclists Executive Director. This ride is friends and family members honoring their
loved ones, taking time to reflect and asking motorists to remember that we all have a right to get
home safely.
This years ride will begin and end on the Pfluger (Lamar) Pedestrian Bridge that connects W.
Riverside Dr. and W. Cesar Chavez St. Meeting time is 6:30p.m. and the ride will begin at 7p.m.
Riders often wear black armbands in memory of cyclists that have been killed and red armbands
that have been injured while sharing the road with motorists.
This ride has no sponsors and no registration fee. It is required to wear a helmet and follow all
rules of the road. Bastidas said the pace will not exceed 12 mph and will pause to regroup
halfway through the ride at the Texas State Capitol.
