2) Elision

In connected speech, it is common for sound segments to be deleted or omitted. The omission
can occur within the word or across word boundary. This sedmental feature of speech is
commonly observable in words with unstressed syllables which are omitted in rapid speech.
medicine [mdisin] [mdsin]
camera [kmr] [kmr]
cup of coffee [kp v kfi] [kp kfi]
pen and paper [pn end peip] [pnnpeip]
The non-elision of a phoneme would sound odd and is indicative of a non-proficient speaker.
vegetable [vedtbl] [veditbl]
chocolate [tklt] [tklt]

3) Linking
Sound segments of a word are seldom discrete or clearly seperated from the sound of other
words. They become linked or connected. This is known as linking. The linking [r] is
prominent before a vowel. The linking [r] can be seen in the utterance of four apes [f :r eips]
which is realised as [f:reips] in rapid speech with the [r] sound linking the two words. The
addition of the [r] is referred to as the intrusive [r]. The [r] sound is inserted between the
juncture of two words.
media event [midi ivnt] [midjrivnt]
Formula A [f:mjl ei] [f:mjlrei]
