Definition: A grass that is native to the tropical areas of South Asia; used

for sugar production.


New Guinea: First place where sugar cane was discovered! People would
chew on it for its sweet flavor.
Asia: Introduced by Arab traders to South East Asia. Originally used as
a medicine for headaches and stomachs.
Europe: When sugar was first introduced, it was viewed as a luxury
item. It was so special that they called it "white gold".
South America: Brazil is the largest producer of sugar cane in the
world. They even have cars that run off of the ethanol produced
by the

sugarcane!
Caribbean: Sugarcane was first introduced by Christopher Columbus. The
climate and temperature of the Caribbean is great for growing sugar
cane.
North America: Sugarcane is produced in Louisiana, Texas, Hawaii, and
Florida. The average American consumes 20 tsp of sugar per day!
