MOLECULE MAP

Organic compounds
Carbon Chemistry
- carbon atoms can form large,
complex, diverse molecules by
bonding to form partners including
other atoms.
- The simplest organic compounds
are hydrocarbons

Giant Molecules from

Smaller Building Blocks
- The three categories of Large
Biological Molecules (carbohydrates,
proteins and nucleic acid) are called
macromolecules because of their size

Large Biological
Molecules
Carbohydrates
- Are class of molecules that
includes sugar and polymers of
sugar

Three Classifications of sugar

1) Monosaccharide
-are the monomers of
carbohydrates -they cannot be
broken down into smaller sugars
2) Disaccharides
-is constructed fro two
monosaccharids by adehydration
reaction

3) Polysaccharides
-long chains of sugars- polymers of
monosaccharides

Lipids

- are hydrophobic

- neither macromolecules nor polymers

- are diverse group of molecules nade from
different building blocks

Two Types of Lipids

1) Fats

consist of glycerol molecule

joined with three fatty acid molecules
through dehydration
the resulting fat is
called triglyceride

2) Steroids
-they are also hydrophobic
-has carbon skeleton with four fused
rings

Proteins

- a polymer of amino acid monomers

- are macromolecules which are made
by stringing together a common set of 20
kinds of amino acid

Nucleic Acid
- macromolecules that store information and
provide the instructions for building proteins

Two Types of Nucleic Acid

1) DNA

2) RNA
