    Orford Castle in England was an experimental design by King Henry II and his architect Alnoth circa 1165 to address vulnerabilities when undermining castle towers during sieges. Henry II realized that traditional square or rectangular towers were weak at their angles and could be brought down through selective mining.     Orford
    Castle . .
    Reputed to be Henry II's pet Castle. The reasonit was an
    experiment and a successful one. Henry seems to have been t h e '
    first to realise that the angle of a tower was most vulnerable to
    assault by undermining. ' To offset this danger he visualised
    12-sided or 8-sided towers ; Orford was the outcome. It was
    designed by the Royal architect Alnoth, circa 1165 ; Alnoth, by
    the way, had a permanent salary of yd. a day and carried out a lot
    of work for Henry II on the Tower of London and the Palace
    of Westminster.
    Functional design in the past was limited by the character of
    building materials availableto-day, with steely there is much more
    freedom for both purpose and expression in design.
