Bulk Liquid Measurement Application vs. Tank Gauging Solutions

Due to the wide range of Products stored, from unprocessed crude to refined white products, a single technology
is not suitable for every application. Certain products may require refrigeration or heating; the products may be
highly viscous or gaseous. As the tank gauge penetrates the tank, it must be able to measure the products
effectively and also be able to withstand these additional environmental conditions.

What is Tank Gauging?

Tank gauging is the generic name given to the measurement of liquids (product) in bulk storage tanks with the aim
of quantifying how much product is in the tank, "gauging the contents of a tank". Today, the oil & gas industry
uses the static measurement of the tank contents to account for product stored and product moved into and out of
the tank. In other industries, such as food or beverage, chemical or waste water, the tank is subject to continuous
process conditions.

Selecting the Correct Instrument

There are many instruments and systems available that can provide the combination of measurements that will
allow an accurate quantity assessment and, hence, good inventory management. But, before a particular
instrument is chosen based on it's data specification alone, other factors should be assessed that affect the
application and create uncertainties in the measurement.
