Overview Healthy Campus 2020

Healthy Campus 2020 is WMUs collaborative effort to raise the
overall health of the campus community by connecting,
coordinating and assessing the diverse ways the Western family
creates a healthy environment. It is part of a national effort by the
American College Health Association, which is aligned with the U.S.
Department of Health and Human Services to improve overall
health on college campuses nationwide.
The priority goals identified by WMUs Healthy Campus 2020 include
three focus areas:
mental health
substance use (i.e. alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs)
violence prevention (i.e. abusive relationships, sexual assault,
and physical assault)

Limitations
Student group responses were limited, findings could not be fully
generalized to all student groups because of the limited sample.

Research Question
What are health student groups in the WMU community doing that may align
with the Healthy Campus 2020 initiative?

Design
Protocol

Assessment Type & Procedure

This assessment consisted of an needs assessment. It was used to determine the presence or absence of the conditions,
services, and learning opportunities related to Healthy Campus 2020 and Western Michigan University Registered Student
Organizations (RSO).

Students were not quick to respond, possibly due to a lack of

awareness regarding the purpose of the Healthy Campus 2020
initiative.

The process consisted of first designing the interview protocol. A semi-structured individual interview method was used.
This interview consisted of a combination of 10 open-ended and closed questions. Through these questions the
researchers sought to determine if the organizations aligned to Healthy Campus 2020 and what would be incentive
enough to share their data with the initiative.

Students were unable to connect their organizations purpose to

the larger purpose of Healthy Campus 2020.

Recommendations

Response Outreach

Problem/Issue
Identify what programming and events are currently occurring on
Western Michigan Universitys campus that align with and support
the Healthy Campus 2020 initiative.

Initially the researchers contacted a pre-determined group of 14 RSO. They were selected through the researchers
assumption and knowledge of their Healthy Campus 2020 alignment.
First Contact Email contact for individual, in-person interview
Second Contact Phone call contacts for phone, skype, in-person interview

Participant
Outreach

Participant Response Rate

In order to effectively facilitate student involvement with this

campus-wide initiative, the TAC committee needs to determine
what would mobilize students, faculty, and staff in participating
with the Healthy Campus 2020 initiative. The results would then be
analyzed in order to assist with strategic planning going forward.

As part of the official launch of the Healthy Campus 2020 initiative,

a written request for proposals from students, faculty and staff will
be created from the assessment results.

Consider hiring an undergraduate/graduate student to continue

project until Jan. 31, 2015 to continue qualitative interview
approach for gathering data.

14%

One year from the official launch of Healthy Campus 2020 it

would be beneficial to pursue further qualitative & quantitative
assessments to further refine the initial request for proposals.

Results/Analysis

Note: Due to time constraints population sample was narrowed to

just students.

Mission & Goals Alignment

We recognize that the sample population was small and therefore

may not be an accurate representation. The following suggestions
may provide a larger sample to then refine the request for
proposals.
Consider a quantitative survey to gather further data on student
organizations alignment with Healthy Campus 2020.
