VALUES CLARIFICATION

Is a process by which people identify, examine, and develop their own


individual values.
In this principle, no one set of values is right for everyone.
This promotes personal growth by fostering awareness, empathy, and insight.
(thus,influencing their actions)
Therefore, important in dealing with ethical problems.
3 processes:
o Choosing (Cognitive/Thinking)
o Prizing (Affective/Feeling)
o Acting (Behavioral/Performing)
Clarifying the NURSES Values
o Need to examine the values they hold about:
Life
Death
Health
Illness
Other issues such as: Abortion and Euthanasia
Clarifying the CLIENTS Values
o Need to identify their values that might influence and relate to specific
health problem
o VC is used to clarify conflicting values that are detrimental to their
health, like:
Ignoring professional advice
Inconsistent communication or behavior
Repeated admission with the same problem
Confusion or uncertainty about which course of action to take
o PROCESS to help clients clarify their values:
List alternatives
Examine possible consequences of choices
Choose freely
Feel good about the choice
Affirm the choice
Act on the choice
Act with a pattern
*Redirect the clients question back to them rather than answering
from the nurses personal view.
