information to specific audiences for specific purposes.
Goal: We will write instructions to make Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches

EXPERIENCE
Done with View. Ask students if they have ever had to construct something before using a set of instructions or if
they have ever had to cook. Allow students to comment on how it was done
Give handout 'Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich Recipe' blank sheet
SPEAK
Speak with students about the processes involved in making a recipe. Encourage class discussion about the
elements of recipes (and procedural writing in general). Topics include:
Goal/Objective
Materials/resources needed
Any safety issues that need to be addressed
Steps for procedure
Instructions-- make sure to include words like first, next, then, finally/lastly!
Proofreading/checking-- reader shouldn't have to make assumptions!
TRANSFORM
Done during Speak phase-- prepare a PB&J sandwich according to student instruction, only doing exactly what
students day. Point out any time that an assumption is made, but make mistakes accordingly.
Prepare assessment material by having students fill out the recipe sheets during demonstration
Exit Ticket: Quiz students on elements of an essay's first paragraph (e.g. thesis, body sentences, conclusion/tie
in to first paragraph)
