ENGI 8692 Drilling Engineering for Petroleum Exploration and Production ENGI 9118 Advanced Drilling Engineering Faculty of Engineering, Memorial University of Newfoundland Winter, 2014 Assignment #3 March 5, 2014 In-Class Assignment #1 ~ Due at the end of the lab period. (10 Marks) For the vertical well trajectory A shown in the attached geological section, determine and plot the formation pore pressure ang fracture gradient profiles. All geological formations are normally pressured except the Devonian which is 10% underpressured and the Ordovician which is 20% overpressured. The tensile strength for all formations can be assumed to be 5 MPa, except the Glacial deposits which have a measured tensile strength of 2 MPa. The minimum and maximum horizontal stress co-efficients are 0.60 and 0.75, respectively. 1 For the well trajectory A in the attached geological section, determine a recommended casing and mud density schedule for drilling the well, subject to the following constraints: (10 Marks) 1a. The conductor casing is set to a depth of 50 m by a separate contractor by augering prior to ‘ig mobilization on the site. . Drilling through the Glacial deposits is done using water as the driling fluid to prevent contamination of near-surface aquifers. Once the Mississipian has been reached, the surface ceasing is installed and normal driling muds can be used, c. The maximum overbalance at the bit is 2 MPa, however, no portion of the uncased wellbore should have a mud pressure outside the bounds of the formation pressure and the fracture pressure. ‘The maximum uncased well interval is 1000 m, as set by legislation. @. The final well interval can use a liner, however, minimize the total length of casing used. 2 Awellis shut-in and mud circulation stopped after a kick volume of 25 bbls is identified by surface mud return measurements. At the time of the kiok, the well was being drilled at a depth of 11,850 ‘eet, the annular capacity of the 200 feet length of collars is 0.020 bbls\foot, the annular capacity of the drilpipe is 0.045 bbis/foot, and the mud density was 12 lbs/usg, After shut-in, the surface drillpipe pressure is 300 psig and the surface casing pressure is 385 psig. (15 marks) a. Whats the kick density and is it liquid or gas? b. The hole is cased to a depth of 6000 feet. What is the annular pressure at 6000 feet and the surface casing pressure when the top of the kick volume is circulated to the bottom of the casing? What is the annular casing pressure at surface when the kick volume reaches surface? What is the required kill mud density to regain control of the well? . Assuming that the mud is changed to the kill mud before mud circulation is restored, what is annular pressure at the top of the kick zone ifthe kill mud is circulated to the base of the well? The inside diamater of the entire drill string is 3 inches, 3. Repeat Question 2 on the basis that the surlace casing pressure is 520 psig (instead of 385 psig) alter shutting in the well and stopping mud circulation. (15 marks) Due Monday, February 17.
