How do you see waste in our country? Do you see it as a crisis or an opportunity? The Night Secondary School (NSS)
students see it as an opportunity to bring out their best given limited resources and time constraint.
Last April 26, the Night Secondary School of St. Scholasticas College, Manila won second place for the Best MTV
Contest on Solid Waste Management. Judges were Mr. Fred Kasilag, multi-awarded TV commercial director, animator
and graphic Illustrator, Mr. Jigz Recto, multi-awarded director, writer, producer and environmental advocate, and Ms.
Adelia Licos, manager of Ayala Foundation.
The winners of the music videos will be shown in Ayala Malls and Theatres in partnership with Ayala Cinemas and will
be used for the advocacy campaign of the Ayala Foundation's Solid Waste Management (SWM) Program.
The contest was spearheaded by Life Long Initiative for the Formation of Ecosystem (LIFE Inc.) and San Ildefonso
Parish, Ecology Ministry in collaboration with Ayala Foundation. It served as a venue to tap the musical ability and
leadership skills of the Night Secondary Students and to develop their commitment to protect the environment. The
main objective of the contest is to promote environmental protection through proper solid waste management
by reaching out to the youth through the use of creative advocacy campaign materials.
The first part of the contest was the submission of lyrics of the song. Winners of the elimination round would then
advance to the finals. Out of the twenty-seven (27) entries submitted, ten (10) were selected as finalists, two (2) of
which came from the NSS. The entry entitled Maganda Ang Mundo was written by Ms. Ruby Ann Dimabayao, newly
graduate of Batch 2008 and Ang Bagong Kabataan by Golden Rose Gabriel, incoming 5th year student.
Before the competition, Ms. Dimabayao wanted to take up BS Accountancy at St. Scholasticas College. After the
competition, she changed her mind and decided to take BS Music major in Guitar.

Due to time constraints, only one entry ("Maganda ang Mundo") made it to the final competition. The musical piece was
sang by Ms. Rhoda Tayag, faculty member of the Night Secondary School and College units. The music was arranged by
Mr. Krish Pincaro, a student from the School of Music.
Through this contest, students were given opportunities to learn special skills in planning, arranging a musical
composition, recording, video shooting, directing, and editing within a limited period of time. The students worked
on the project for seven (7) straight working days. They learn how to manage their time in order to visit sites for video
shooting such as CCP, Paco market, Paraiso ng Maynila, Baywalk, Robinsons Mall, Arroceros Park, a junkshop, Mrs.
Tayags residence and in-campus. In the process, they have developed a strong camaraderie among themselves and
with their teachers.
The support from the Benedictine sisters was outpouring. The commitment shown by the students and faculty was
commendable. Faculty members volunteered to assist in preparing the food, to communicate with students and offices
for the use of various facilities and needed workforce and to train students to be stewards of the environment. Working
students took more than a day off from their job to extend their help - thanks to their very understanding employers
and parents.
Congratulations NSS! Ikaw ang Bagong Kabataan! We are proud of you!
