The Korean alphabet is called 'Hangeul.'
Each letter in Hangeul indicates an individual sound or phoneme.
Hangeul is an alphabetic system and was created by King Sejong in
1443
during
the
Joseon
Dynasty.
It
was
originally
called
?
.
.
Since that time, unused letters were removed and new letters were
added; now there are 21 vowels and 19 consonants currently being
used in contemporary Korean, which are detailed in the following
section.

(2) 1 (Consonants 1)
There are 5 principal consonants, which are modeled after the place
there corresponding sounds are articulated in the mouth. Consonants
for similar sounds that are articulated in the same place are formed by
adding strokes on top of the principal consonants.
Consonants are always used together with a vowel.

Korean Romanization is the representation of Hangeul using Latin script.
This workbook follows the korean romanization scheme established by
The National Institute of the Korean Language.

(3) 1 (Syllables 1)
Unlike English, where letters are written sequentially to form words
Hangul letters are grouped into blocks, such as han, to form
syllables. That is, although the syllable hanmay look like a single
character, it is actually composed of three letters: h, a, and
n. Each syllable block consists of two to five letters, including at least
onevowel. These blocks are then arranged horizontally from left to
right or vertically from top to bottom to form words.
Korean syllables consist of a structure which always has an initial
consonant, then a vowel, and sometimes final consonants. All 19
consonants can come before vowels; 'o' before a vowel remains silent
and acts as a place holder.
The two major forms of syllables are as follows;
1) When a vowel has a vertical shape, the syllable is constructed as
follows.

2) When a vowel has a horizontal shape, the syllable is constructed as

(2) 2 (Consonants 2)
There are five double consonants and 14 consonants that are made by
adding strokes to the principal consonants. This makes a total of 19
Korean consonants as shown below.
The sound ""(K.R.: kk) sounds like "k" in the English word "sky".
The sound ""(K.R.: tt) sounds like "t" in the English word strike'.
The sound ""(K.R.: pp) sounds like "p" in the English word spy'.
The sound ""(K.R.: ss) sounds like "sc" in the English word

The sound ""(K.R.: jj) sounds like "j" in the English word jazz'.

(Korean Bowing)
The Korean people have traditionally considered proper etiquette very
important, and have followed strict rules for bowing according to time,
place and person. The three kinds of bows are as follows:
: This most traditional and formal
bow is only done indoors. You hold
both hands together at the forehead,
carefully descending toward the ground
vertically. Upon reaching the ground,
you then bend from the waist until
both your head and hands touch the
ground.
: This more casual style of bowing
also bends from the waist with the hands
held together, but only to about a 45
angle.
It is common to

is the most casual and informal level of speech in
Korean. It is used
among peers or to people who are younger than you. isn't commonly
used for first meeting; usually friends ask permission to use after
getting to know each other. Towards younger people and children, is
common and acceptable to use without asking permission.
Most usually only differ by dropping the use of '~ at the end of the

(Korean Food)
Korean food is all about balance. A meal is created by keeping the
idea of harmony in mind, with a bit of sweet and salty, spicy and mild,
hot and cold, yin and yang. A "traditional" meal is composed of rice, a
soup, kimchi () and a variety of smaller side dishes, called
"banchan ()." Each person gets his/her own bowl of rice and soup,
while everything else is shared. There are no courses, per se, except
during special "royal" meals, which were reserved for kings, queens
and members of the court. The only time rice isn't served is when the
meal is noodle-based.
The beauty of Korean cuisine is in the variety. There are grains, grilled
meats, salted seafood, vegetables sauted in garlic (/), savory
pancakes (), cold noodles (), steaming hot pots (), porridges
(), salads (/), raw fish (), sauces, simmered dishes (),
soups (/), and so much more.
Rice is the staple of the
Korean

(Tourist Destinations)
(Seoul) is the capital of South Korea and serves as the center of
the countrys political, economic, cultural and educational activities. The
Han River flows east to west through Seoul, and there is a mountain
range from north to south. (Namsan) is in the center of Seoul and
is known for the cable car ride to the tower and the city night view at
the top. The (Dongdaemun) area is known as a shopping spot
where alleys of apparel stores (independent local designs shops) are
open all night. Seoul was the capital of the Joseon Dynasty and there
are still historic sites in the city, such as (Kyungbok palace),
(Changduk palace), and (Biwon garden).
(Jeju Island) is located in the southwest sea of the Korean
peninsula.
It is the largest island in Korea with scenic beauty and well-preserved
cultural traditions. Known as Little Hawaii for its volcanic landscape,
sandy beaches, and waterfalls, Jeju Island is one of the worlds top 10
tourist attractions with over four million visitors a year. It remains the
most popular honeymoon resort in Korea. Jeju has hosted numerous
international meetings and summit conferences.
With many historic treasures of Korea, (Gyungju) is like an outdoor
museum. (Bulguk Temple) has the finest Buddhist treasures
including the (Seokguram) Buddha statue, which was included in
UNESCOs World Heritage List in 1995.
There are different destinations to enjoy four seasons of Korea:
Cherry blossom in (Jinhae) or rape flowers on Jeju Island in
spring, autumn leaves of (Mt. Naejang), and snow-covered
(Mt. Seorak) in the winter.

Korean Public Etiquette
Etiquette is very important not only to be respectful, but also to
learn about a culture and what its people do. When visiting to a new
country, it is good to know the basics of local etiquette and general
politeness. In South Korea, etiquette is very important, much more so
than in many western countries.
There are a few rules for riding the bus or subway to ensure that
you do not get in trouble. Seats at either end of a subway car are
reserved exclusively for the elderly, disabled, or pregnant women. Give
up your seat to someone who is more in need if the train or bus is
very full. It is good to wait for people to leave the train before
attempting to enter. On the bus, you should only enter through the
front and exit via the middle door.
Its really important to learn how to behave in public places. It is
essential to keep quiet in public places. Koreans find noisiness very
rude. Korea also enforces strict smoking bans in public places, such
as cafes, schools, and playgrounds. Now more places offer smoking
areas separated by glass walls.
