Ho chango. SERGEANT JOHN W. BELK IS PULLING "THE EAGLE SPECIAL".
Sergeant John W. Belk, better known to railway circles
as Billy, son of Conductor and lirs Henry H. Belk of the
Columbus Division, who is serving in the Philippines with
"Cc" Company o f the 737th Railway Operating Battalion as
locomotive engineerx writes home often of his rich experienc-,
es in G.I. Railroading. In order that his many friends may
get a glimpse of overseas railroading, Sgt. Belk's letters
are full of interesting details.

Prior to his induction into the army at Fort itcPherson
July 15, 1944, Sgt. Belk was employed by the Central Of
Georgia Railway at Columbusand Served as fireman, hostler,
and switcheengineer.
He begun his service in taking his basic training at
Camp Plauche, Lae and his advanced training in two stations
namely Fort Warren, Wyo. amd with the liissouri Pacific at
Fort Robinson, Ark.. At the completion of five and one half
months training he was sent overseas with the organization
that he is mow with. After leaving the states, the organization
was given one mechanical and one rule examination which lasted
three of the fourty-five day trip.
On arrival in the Philippines we found a good roadbed
But the gamge was 40inches and rough. Their motive power _
and rolling stock was old and in very poor condition. Their
favalities and country was destroyed so bad that we had to start
with what the Japs ran and left and built over. We have some
new equiptment now and we ere really railrosdinge
As for motive power we are useing compound Nallets and
"Mikes® Without sir and automatic couplers and with steam jamb
brakes and Johnson bars. My engine that I run from Yam until
Spm "Ehe Eagle Special" is number 885. The train number id
@1 and 62 even a local. We were issued 21 Jewel Hamilton ~
watches after we landed here.

On the trains where passengers are carried tickets aren't
soldat stations for ticket purchasing over here is a bit
ubusual. On entering the door of the cat , you pay for a ticket
to ride,of which I am sending you threex, by size and height.
Phere are lines painted on the door frames and they measure
you as you go in.It doesn't matter how old you are only your
height or size. Only two children are allowed to be carried
because only two can sit in a seat. We are really getting sone
valuable experience for we as a company are killing Japs and
railroading. Most of the Japs have been killed along the rosd—
way.
Tell everyone that just because we are over here that isn't
any sign that we don't have any social life. I go into town
and have visited some of the natives in their grass huts,
One native had all of his property destroyed and then built
the hut that he is now living in. They aren't primative as
some people would think for they had a piano and two daughters
who could play almost any song for you and I mean American tooe
