Herodotus called the civilizations of ancient Egypt the "gift of the Nile" because the river was essential to their survival and prosperity. Without the Nile's flooding and deposition of rich silt each year, Egypt would not have been able to support agriculture and its people would have starved, as rainfall in Egypt is negligible. The Nile created fertile black land for crops opposite the desert red land, making agriculture and civilization in Egypt possible.

meant when he called the civilisations of ancient Egypt, the gift of the Nile? A. I think he would have meant that they were lucky to have the river, because they wouldnt have rain at all so the river helped them survive with growing crops near the river and plantation across the land. They wouldnt be alive without it so its a life saviour for Egypt. There were two sides in Egypt red land and black land the red land was the dessert and black land was were the Nile
was and were crops and when the
Nile flooded a layer of rich, black layer silt ( silt is small particles of sand moving with the water).
