TITLE : - EFFECT OF HYDROGEN BLENDING ON CNG-FUELED VEHICLES

SOURABH JOGEE (214ME5327)

M.TECH,CRYOGENICS AND VACUUM TECHNOLOGY

Abstract
The combustion of CNG
produces less emission, due to its
simple structure and absence of fuel
evaporation hence it is a viable
alternative for fossil fuel .
Addition of small amount of
hydrogen can improve the
combustion characteristics and
reduces exhaust emissions .
Experimentation was performed
in the speed range of 2500-4000
rpm with variation in load.
The process involves to regulate
the pressure in the input line to vary
the amount per unit time to be
inducted into the engine. It is done
by taking the blends of 5%, 10%,
15% of H2 with CNG by energy and
various operating parameters were
taken.

EMISSIONS:-

1. The neat CNG has wide

flammability limits. The
flammability limits increase as
the percentage of hydrogen in
CNG is increased.
2. The results show the engine
running on CNG on equivalence
ratio from 0.65 to 1.19 and
HCNG on equivalence ratio from
0.62 to 1.28 an attempt was
made to run the engine at the
lowest possible equivalence
ratio.
3. It observed that maximum value
of BTHE for CNG is 19.5% and
for 5% blend of H2 with CNG is
20.5% at an equivalence ratio of
0.91 and speed of 2500rpm.It
results into an increase of
5.128%.
4. The BSEC and BSFC was found
minimum at an equivalence ratio
of 0.9 and had higher values at
lean and rich mixtures.

Objectives
1) To check suitability of S.I. engine
for HCNG on gasoline engine.
2) To enhance the combustion of
CNG by adding hydrogen.
3) To study effects of HCNG blends
over CNG.
4) To obtain maximum thermal
efficiency with lean fuel mixture.
5) To reduce exhaust emissions
below standard norms.

Conclusion

5. NITROGEN OXIDES
EMISSIONS:-

Modifications:1) Mixer

2) Flametrap

5. The CO emissions are less at

lean mixture and increases
sharply at rich mixtures.
6.

NOx increase with higher

temperature, longer high
temperature combustion
duration and greater availability
of oxygen (up to a point).
