Procedure
1. Work in groups of three students.
2. Have subject One sit down in a chair and sit comfortably without moving. Record:
a. Resting heart rate (detect your heart beat for 15 seconds as demonstrated
in class, multiply x 4)
b. Breathing rate (use the stopwatch to count the number of breaths Subject
One takes in 15 seconds by having their partner watch for the rise and fall
of the chest cavity. Calculate the number of breaths per minute, by
multiplying the breaths in 15 seconds x 4)
3. Record the results in the accompanying data table as the Resting heart rate
Baseline breath rate for Subject One.
4. Have subject One do as many push-ups as possible, for as long as possible,
pushing as hard as possible. Record in data table number of push-ups and the
time spent doing push-ups until muscle fatigue.
5. Record heart rate and breathing rate on the data table for push-ups.

6. Have subject One take a 3 minute break.

7. Have subject One do as many squats as possible, for as long as possible,
pushing as hard as possible. Record in data table number of squats and the time
spent doing squats until muscle fatigue.
8. Record heart rate and breathing rate on the data table for squats
9. Repeat Steps 1-8 for the second and third group member (Subject Two and
Three).
10. Music from Pandora will be playing in the classroom throughout the activity. Two
sections will have calming music, two sections will have energizing music. We
will combine everyones data for analysis.
