TYPES OF CONTEXT CLUES


1.Inference- you may be able to figure out the meaning of the word by inference due
to the context of the sentence
2. Definition- the sentence may define the word in an appositive
3.Example- There may be an example of the unknown word in the sentence or
paragraph
4. Antonym- There may be an opposite in the sentence or paragraph to help the reader
5. Synonym- There may be another word that means the same in the sentence or
paragraph to help the reader.

Option 1:
1. Work in groups of four
2. Using your own AR books, scan for words you do not know
3. Once your group finds 3 words, STOP
4. Then brainstorm ways that you can define those words.
5. Define those words
Option 2:
1. As a group compose a sentence or paragraph using a word
that most of your classmates would not be able to define.
Provide context clues within your text. The class will
attempt to define your word using those clues.
