Experimental Setup
Procedure
There are two parts to the experimental procedure. First is the calibration of the
Dynamometer Scale with which a base observation would be made which would
be used for a reference to make comparisons to the actual readings. The second
is the test procedure that would make readings and based on that readings and
the base reference obtained in the calibration, would derive the Power and
Torque output of the Pelton wheel.

3.2.1 Calibration
1. Turn loose the loading knob so that the friction belt is loose and not in
contact with anything.
2. Place weight hanger on the pointer which is 50g at 100mm. Unclamp
quadrant arm and rotate it slowly clockwise until the pointer lifts of the
lower stop pin and reaches a central position between the stop pins.
3. Read off and record the angular position to the pointer.
4. Add weight in increments of 20g and take the readings.
5. Plot scale readings to load applied at 100mm. The slope of the graph give
the calibration of the dynamometer and is the base reference.

3.2.2 Test Procedure

1. Remove weights and reattach the friction cord.
2. Start up the pump and open the supply valve
3. Turn the loading knob that the friction belt can make contact and induce
frictional force which can be seen by the pointer moving down to the lower
stop pin.
4. Release the load then till the pointer point at 0 degrees.
5. Take the rotational speed of the Pelton wheel with the photo tachometer
as seen in Figure .
6. Increase frictional loads such that the angle increases with increments of 5
degrees and then take the rotational speed readings for each increment.
7. Obtain torque by use of the base reference.
8. Obtain power by multiplying Torque to Rotational speed in rad/s.
