Arbiters Checklist

The following is a checklist for arbiters. It suggests what equipment should be


brought to an event and the tasks that should be carried out during and immediately
after the event. A trainee arbiter should also seek a report from the arbiter supervising
him or her. Similarly the Chief Arbiter may be asked to write a report on the
Tournament Director if that person is seeking an International Organiser norm.

Before the event.

Things to do at the event


Initially
Check for byes from entry forms
Confirm time controls
Familiarise yourself with clock being
used
Make sure players have best use of
space and lighting
Ensure sets facing in correct direction,
usually with clock on Blacks right.
Before each round
Remove any byes and do pairing
Produce pairing sheet
Put out scoresheets
Put out result slips
Set/check clocks
Arrange name cards/flags if used
Ensure sets still facing in correct way
At start of round
Ensure all clocks are started
Check for missing players

During round
Check clocks
Update results
Update charts
Patrol playing area
Check noise levels
Check temperature
Check lighting/sun (switch on lights/
close curtains, etc)
Watch for and observe time scrambles
Update grading data
Make sure players are recording
After last game
Produce prizelist
Complete grading info
Finalise charts
Reports
