Report on Sabre Internship

Prepared for
Dr. Brenda Sims
By Kaitlyn Stockton
University of North Texas
August 2015

Introduction
From May - August 2015, I worked as a technical writer intern for Sabre in
Southlake, TX. I worked with the Host Air and Connectivity teams under the
management of Saiful Karim.
On the first day of my internship, I also met my buddy, Vibiana Schielzith, the
team's business analyst who provided me help and advice.
During my internship, I completed various types of documentation, gained general
and web design skills, and worked with a team to compose a winning app.
This report details my experience during my practicum. This report includes a
detailed list of projects I have worked on and documentation I have completed
during my internship. I have divided the document into methods, results, and
conclusions sections.

Methods

This section lists and describes my tasks during my internship. I have divided this
section based on task and provided explanations for how I completed each duty.
Release Notes
I completed 15.6, 15.7, and 15.8 release notes during my time at Sabre. I created
both an Airline Solutions and Travel Network version for each month. I started
working on 15.9, but did not complete it before I left.
I created release notes for new projects and enhancements or corrections to
previous projects. These release notes list new enhancements or corrections to any
issues. I looked at the descriptions of each of these and rewrote the descriptions in
reader-centered language. I then communicated with the business analysts or
system owners in charge of Pricing, Availability, and Connectivity to ensure I did
not alter the meaning of the description. I then compiled the items into two
documents based on their corresponding department Airline Solutions or Travel
Network.
Weekly Reports
I created Weekly Capability Reports for specific weeks throughout June, July, and
August. My team creates weekly reports to show the achievements,
enhancements, or corrections they are releasing. At the beginning of my
internship, I created weekly reports until the end of August. However, releases
often change, so I continued to review the changes in case I needed to add or move
a release to another week,
For each release, I rewrote each projects description and communicated with each
projects appropriate business analyst or system owner to ensure its new
description conveyed the same meaning but in more reader-centered language. I
then formatted the releases based on a template.
SharePoint Redesign and Reorganization
On the first day of my internship, my manager asked me what I enjoyed. I
mentioned I love design, so he gave me the task of redesigning his teams
SharePoint website. The homepage of the website was a mess and did not feature
the teams new name anywhere on it. It had a list of team members, but did not

include newer employees. It also listed the wrong positions for certain members
and included former employees. I decided to first redesign the sites home page
and then make a team members page, one that would include my managers
different teams, all team members, contact information, and more.
I created three different lists of employees for Host Air, Host Connectivity, and
MVS. I made links to each different team on the front page and on the top of the
team members' page for easy access and navigation. For each team member, I
listed the person's name with a link to their employee profile, position name, email
address with link to send him or her an email and phone number.
After I had finished the team member page, my buddy asked me to reorganize the
folders and file on the SharePoint.
The different teams had been placing all of their files into one file titled Host Air
and Connectivity Project Documents. This file has become a mess with Sales Guide,
Inventory, Pricing and Shopping, combined team projects, release notes, and other
documentation thrown in without any type of organization. To fix this, I made each
team its own list page and moved documents to these new folders. Each different
team has its own area now. If a user wants to access a Sales Guide document, he or
she can just click on Sales Guide and search through that teams documents. This
organization makes it easier for specific teams to find their corresponding projects
and documentation. I also assisted any people who have gotten lost while files
were moved around.
I knew little of SharePoint before I began the project, so I watched Lynda videos to
understand the program. I also practiced using HTML and CSS to create the
homepage and team member page.
Intern Case Competition
Sabre interns have the opportunity to participate in the companys annual Intern
Case Competition. My team was tasked to examine if Sabre could use voice
recognition technology in their products to improve its B2B experience.
During the past few months, I helped research different areas we wanted to try
creating an app in. We focused on making a voice recognition application for
housekeeping that would allow managers to improve their staffs training and
efficiency.
I worked with a communication student and a developer to design the user
interface for our app. I used Adobe products and learned basic HTML and how to
use Andriod Developer to add some features to the application. Although we were
adding voice to a Sabre product in production, we still had to recreate and make
new interfaces for certain screens. I also worked with the communication student
to create and design PowerPoints for our midpoint and final presentation.

Results
This section describes what I have accomplished and learned during my internship.
During my time at Sabre, I have completed the following tasks:

Created reader-centered language for text in a real-world environment

Gained knowledge of HTML and CSS

Used SharePoint and SharePoint Designer tools to edit a website
Operated SharePoint to reorganize files into a structured manner
Communicated with Subject Matter Experts to understand travel jargon
Collaborated with people of different backgrounds and expertise to create a
business case
Designed the interface of my teams application
Assisted in creating and designing my teams PowerPoint
Learned basic XML
Operated Android Developer
Used SharePoint to modify and move files and documents
Used PowerPoint animations and more to create and edit presentations
Operated web-ex and other conference technology to communicate with
others.

My team won second in the intern case competition as well.

Conclusion
I am pleased with the real world work experience I have gained. This internship
has taught me how to work with others especially those from other fields. Sabre
has given me a brief glimpse into the corporate world and life. It has steered me in
the direction of multiple jobs I may be interested in as future careers. I am
interested in looking into the fields of user interface design and designing
applications.
