StudentsinAdvancedArtwillbeexpectedtobuildaportfolioofworkthroughassignmentsand/or
independentprojects,andtoselectoneothersemestergoal,suchasengaginginanoffcampus
internshiporapprenticeship,participatinginorcuratingashow,performance,orexhibit,applying
tooneormorecollegesorprofessionalskillstrainingprograms,jobsincreativefields,etcetera.
YouwillalsohavetheoptionofsubmittingyourportfolioforcriticalevaluationbytheCollegeBoard
toearnAPcredit.
Wewillmeetregularlyduringclasstimetoestablishandmaintainanongoingdiscourseaboutyour
projectsandotherengagements.Iwillhelpyousecureconnectionsinthecommunity,trynew
media,completeportfoliosforprogramapplicationsorAP,andmore.Asasmalllearning
community,studentsinthisclasswillbeexpectedtoworktogetherandsupportoneanother
throughconstructiveandprofessionalcritiques,collaborativeprojects,andsharingofskills.
Therewillbeseveralopportunitiesoverthecourseoftheyearforinvolvementincommunityart
projects,studentswillbeencouragedtoattendforcredit(andpossibleextracredit).Nooutside
timecommitmentswillbemandatory.

About me:
IholdaBFAinstudioartfromtheUniversityofArizonawithafocusonpaintinganddrawing,andIkeepup
mypersonalpracticeinastudiodowntown.Itaughtartworkshopstoallgradelevelsfor10yearsbeforejoiningthefaculty
atTucsonHighandteachingEnglishfortwoyears.Thisismysecondyearteachingintheartdepartment,andIhave
completedCollegeBoardAPStudioArtteacherTraining.MydaughterisasophomoreatTucsonHighthisyear,andIam
alsothefacultyadvisorfortheCreativeWritingClubandtheliterarymagazinehere.
Course Objectives
ThecontentandperformancegoalsforthiscoursearebasedontheArizonaStateStandardsfor
VisualArts.Uponcompletionoftheirstudy,studentswillbeableto:
Useavarietyoftools,materials,techniques,andskillstocreatetheirownartwork
Usetheprinciplesofartandtheelementsofthedesignintheirownwork,andbeableto
identifytheseinotherworksofart
Createartworktocommunicateideasandmeaning
Applycriteriatoassessthequalityofinprogressandfinishedartwork.
Analyzeandinterpretcontextualideas,meanings,andpurposesofartfromdiverse
culturesandtimeperiods.
Drawthoughtfulconclusionsaboutthesignificanceofart.
Basic Materials
IrecommendallAdvancedArtstudentsbringtheirfavoritesuppliesastheyareabletodoso.Ifyou
intendtoexploreamediumthatwedonothaveinourclassroom,youmayberequiredtopurchase
materialsyourself.IcanhelpstudentswhoareunabletofundtheirartapplyforgrantsfromtheBadger
Foundationandotherlocalorganizations,ifneeded.

Grading Policy
Allworkisgradedusingaholistic,academicstandardsbasedrubricsystem.Forthemostpart,
studentswilleachhaveanindependentplanthatweestablishtogetheratthebeginningofa
semester,andtheywillhavecertaingoalstomeeteachweek.Forexample,ifastudentisworking
atamuseuminaninternshippositionafterschooleachweek,oneoftheirweeklygradesmaybea
writtenreportabouttheirexperiences,oraninterviewtheyconductwithoneofthemuseumstaff.
Astudentwhoisworkingonanindependentstudyprojectmakingaflotillaofgiantplasterwhales
intheirbackyardmayneedtobringinaslidepresentationtoshowthattheyhavemeta
constructiongoal,andtotalkabouttheirprocesswithotherstudents.
GradeswillbeuploadedtoTUSDStatstwiceperweek,asstipulatedbydistrictpolicy.

Attendance Policy
Thisisprimarilyastudiobasedartclass,sonearlyalloftheworkwedoiscreatedduringclass
time.Consequently,studentsareexpectedtoattendeveryclassandtobe
ontime
andreadyto
workwhenthebellrings.PleaseseetheTucsonHighRightsandResponsibilitieshandbookfor
guidelinesaboutwhatconstitutesexcusedorunexcusedabsences,andtoviewtheschoolstardy
policy.
Late Work
Forthemostpart,studentsinthisclassarecreatingtheirowndeadlines,soforthemostpartthey
willbeexpectedtoworkatareasonablepaceandmeettheirowngoals(andgoalssetwithinthe
class)bytheendofaquarterorsemester.Also,aswithprofessionalartists,iftheydontmeeta
deadline,theycantgetpaid,soNolateworkwillbeacceptedunless:

Artistic Integrity
Inthisclass,studentsarechallengedtocreatetheirownoriginalwork.Whilethereisalong
traditionofappropriationinart,andthereisvalueinmimickingmasterartists,copyingotherwork
directlywithoutalterationisplagiarism,andwillnotbeaccepted.Likewise,copyingotherstudents
work,passingofftheideasofothersasyourown,orhavingsomeoneelsedoyourworkforyou,is
dishonestandaformofplagiarism;theseactionsareunacceptable.
Studio Time
Forstudentswhoneedtimetoworkoutsideofclass,thereareseveralopportunitiestocomeinfor
studiotime.Theroomwillbeopenduringconferencetimes(Mondaysfrom1:573:00PM,and
Wednesdaysfrom1:572:20PM).Ms.Burkwillalsobeheretohelpwithandsupervisestudio
timemostweekdaysafterschool.
PleasetalkwithmeifyouwouldbeabletoparticipateinanAdvancedStudioArtCluboncea
week.Goalsoftheclubcouldbetohaveextendedstudiotime,morefreeformcritiquesand
collaboration,andfundraisingtosupportstudentprojects.
