The chart illustrates the breakdown by areas and by gender in estimated rate of

global illiteracy in year 2000. According to the data above, it is clear that women
are overall had higher illiteracy than men throughout the world.
When looking at the figure at the chart, female in South Asia suffered the highest
illiteracy rates at around 55%. This was followed by an illiteracy rate around 50% of
women in the region of Arab and Sub-Saharan Africa. It is obvious that at an
average of 9%, women in both Latin America and East Asia enjoyed the second
lowest world illiteracy rates, when compared to the female in developed countries
which stood about 2% of illiteracy.
In the meantime, at 34%, men in South Asia region occupied the first rank of
illiteracy rates, which were followed by both Sub-Saharan Africa and Arab States
stood around 30% of illiteracy rates. It should be noted that the second lowest
illiteracy rate fell in the areas of Latin America and East Asia at about 10%, which
was approximately 3 times lower than other part of the world. Finally, male in
developed countries stood comfortably at 1 % of illiteracy rate which is the lowest in
the world.

In conclusion, the chart shows that developed countries possessed the best literacy
level in the world in term of both male and female.
