Week #2 Tutorial Submission Problem

Question
An office complex for a large company currently attracts 1200 person trips per day
from its employees of which 60 percent are by car with an average of 1 passenger per
5 cars. How much would it cost to reduce the car demand by 50% if the company
agrees to pay for public transport for its employees currently travelling by car with
public transport tickets costing $20 per week? State your assumptions.
Traffic Generation to the office complex
VT = (PT MS)/CO

(veh./day)

where,
VT - total Vehicle Trips (veh./day)
PT - total Person Trips (persons/day)
MS - Modal Split (proportion of trips by car)
CO - Car Occupancy (persons/vehicle)
Given that PT = 1200 person trips, MS = 60% trips by car, CO = 1.2 average persons
per car
1200 0.6
VT=
=600 vehicles per da y
1.2
In order to reduce car demand by 50%, it requires to have only
'

V T =0.5 VT =300 vehicles per day

Number of person trips that need to be compensated for 300 vehicle trips

300 1.2=360 persons

Total cost for public transport for 360 persons
360 20=$ 7200 per week
