Run hard, be strong, think big! Percy Cerutty

Welcome to Cross Country! We are excited that you have chosen to join our team this
year. We are now getting into our true season, and the rules for participation on our team
are more rigorous than during the summer.

Requirements for .25 gym credit:

1. Attendance: Attend 95% of practices. Practices are M-F at 2:45 p.m to 4:30.*
Most meets occur on Saturdays; however we may have one or two during the
week. We have approximately 6 weeks of practice before the Region
Championship meet. You are allowed 2 excused absences from practice. You
must tell your coach when you will be gone, why, and write it on the excusal
clipboard (just inside the door of Rm 241) for an absence to be excused. Make-up
runs for absences will be allowed at Coachs discretion and occur at 6:30AM.
You will be responsible for marking the roll each day of practice.
2. Racing: Race in 4 races, putting forth a good effort. There will be approximately
5-6 opportunities to race, however 4 is the required minimum for credit.
3. Commitment: Train with determination everyday. Obey Cross Country rules.

Athlete Responsibilities :
1. Have a positive attitude during practice and when racing.
2. Respect:
a. The Coaches
b. Teammates
c. School and Community Property
d. Opponents and Spectators
3. Be on time and prepared with shoes, watch, and water bottle!
4. Those who attend practice are those who are allowed to race. If you miss a
practice the week before a meet, you will not be allowed to compete in that meet
until you complete a make up workout at 6:30 AM.
5. You must have all proper forms and fees returned to be allowed to practice and
race with the team. All fees and forms are due August 20th. You cannot
practice or compete after this date until fees and forms are complete.
6. No more than one U in the trimester. You cannot compete until this is resolved.
Grade printouts are due each Monday before or at the beginning of practice.
7. Run responsibly on the roads: face traffic, no headphones, cross at crosswalks and
lights, run with another person, carry water.

8. Each athlete is responsible for obtaining at least 2 volunteers (more is better)

to assist with the Wahsatch Rendezvous Invitational that Brighton sponsors
on Saturday, September 19th from 7:30 am to 12 noon.

Parent Note:
Athletes train on the roads in order to get in the mileage they need to increase
their fitness level. They run designated routes each day and are typically unsupervised
while on the roads. Safety on the roads is emphasized. Your son or daughter is
responsible for following the rules of the road: run facing traffic unless on the side walk,
cross at cross walks with the light, carry water, yield to cars, Absolutely NO
Headphones (runners need to be aware of their surroundings), run with someone, and
run skinny when running with others (no more than 2 side by side).
Athletes are expected to ride the bus to meets. Parents must sign a travel waiver
for athletes to drive on their own or with their parent or guardian.

Varsity:
Varsity consists of 7 runners with 3 alternates. The top 7 varsity runners will be
designated after September 19th (after the Rendezvous). We will use the average per mile
time from the previous races and place scored on our team to determine varsity as well as
attendance/dedication. Alternate positions are variable with later races until region.
Varsity runners must also display leadership (be positive, cheer on teammates, listen to
coaches, encourage team spirit) and have perfect attendance. If two runners are
competing for a spot, attitude/attendance will make the difference! Varsity runners are
expected to attend the Saturday Invitationals and will run in the State meet should the
team qualify.

Varsity Lettering:
To letter you must do one of the following besides attending 95% of practices:
A) Finish within the top seven times for the team in at least 3 meets or
B) Qualify and race at the state meet or be the alternate 8th runner at state
C) Committed and Dedicated to Cross Country. (95% attendance, 100%
commitment).

Running Gear List

Two key goals for Brightons Cross Country program are to create a successful
cross country team and to create life long runners. Part of our program is to educate
young adults in the many aspects of recreational and competitive running.
The following is a list of items that athletes should obtain for a successful and
safe running experience.
WATCH: All runners are required to have a watch. Runs are timed and
athletes need to be able to accurately time their training runs. If it tells time, it will do the
job nothing fancy needed.
RUNNING SHOES: Shoes should be new or fairly new. Many athletes bodies
are not accustomed to the pounding of road running. New shoes at the beginning of the
season can help prevent injuries and keep your athlete competitive.
WATER BOTTLE: Athletes will train on the roads where there are no water
fountains. Athletes are required to have a water bottle to carry or a belt with a water
bottle.
SUNSCREEN: Young people want that tan, but it may kill them later. Skin
cancer is on the rise. Athletes should always wear sunscreen.
LIP SCREEN: See above.
SUNGLASSES: Our eyes are not immune to sun damage. An inexpensive pair
of sunglasses with UV protection is sufficient to save eyes from damage.
HAT WITH VISOR: (optional) provides sun protection for face and eyes.
SYNTHETIC CLOTHING: Polyester blends are wonderful. Cotton, when wet
or wet from sweat, will stay wet and can cause chafing. Polyester blends wick sweat
away from the body and dry quickly. Synthetic blends are great in both hot and cold
weather. They keep you warm and dry in cold weather and cool and dry in warm
weather.
UNIFORM SHORTS: $25. Shorts are purchased through the school and must
be obtained to compete in the fall. Pay at the office and bring coach the receipt.
RACING FLATS: Not required, but will make a difference in race time if your
athlete is a competitive runner. (by late August when competition begins)
WEATHER APPROPRIATE CLOTHING (LEFT IN GYM BAG): The fall
weather in Salt Lake is unpredictable. Athletes should have a little bit of everything in
their gym bag including: raingear or umbrella, sweats, winter hat, light weight gloves,
and SNACKS etc.
