Course Description
In the first unit of Honors English III, we will explore a variety of American voices and define what it is
to be an American. Our first unit will establish the theme of the American Dream. We will analyze a
variety of contemporary and historical texts from multiple viewpoints in order to think through and gain
a deeper understanding of what it means to be an American.
Ohio Power Performance Standards:

Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support
analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as
inferences drawn from the text, including determining
where the text leaves matters uncertain
Determine two or more themes or central ideas of a
text and analyze their development over the course of
the text
Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they
are used in the text
a. Including figurative and connotative
meanings
b. Analyze the impact of specific word
choices on meaning and tone, including
words
Write arguments to support claims in an analysis
a. Introduce precise, knowledgeable claims
b. Develop claims and counterclaims,
supplying the most relevant evidence
c. Use words, phrases, and clauses to link
major sections of text, create cohesion, and
clarify relationships between claim(s)
