Captains' Corner with

Mrs. Case, Ms. DeCoster, & Miss Soble
An enormous thank you to all of the parents who helped us by sending in craft materials, coming
in to help, or chaperoning on our trip today to the mall! Our class was able to raise $1,141.12 for
families in need. That is amazing! The students shared how they felt about this enormous
accomplishment. Their responses showed how important they felt this project was and how much they
cared about others. It was very heart warming.
Our classroom spelling bee will be conducted separately by grades on Jan. 15th.
The two top spellers in 2nd and 3rd grade will move on to the school bee on Jan. 22.

In Reading Workshop, we worked on using a dictionary

to find definitions of words we don't understand. We learned to
use guidewords, base/root words if a word with a prefix or a suffix
isn't in the dictionary, and to choose the correct definition when a
word has multiple definitions. We also learned about prefixes and
suffixes.

In our Reading/Writing Workshop and Science Project, we

are writing our final copies of persuasive leaflets and posters on the
importance of protecting living things that are often perceived as
pests. Their products are showing the hard work they put into this!
In math, we took our subtraction test and began learning the
correlation between addition and multiplication. (Multiplication is
simply repeated addition. For example, 6 +6 + 6+ 6 = 6 x 4)
Students applied this knowledge in determining how much money
we made when selling our crafts. For example, "We sold 20 yarn
pets in the first hour of the Bazaar. They cost $6.00 each. How
much money did we make selling Yarn Pets the first hour?" ($20
+ $20 + $20 + $20 + $20 + $20 = $120 OR $20 x 6 = $120.00)
