22: HUMAN REFLEX PHYSIOLOGY

Define reflex and reflex arc.

Be able to name, identify (location of a reflex arc component, see figure 22.1) and describe

function of each element of a reflex arc thats listed below.

Five Reflex Arc Components:
1. The receptor reacts to a stimulus
2. The sensory neuron conducts the afferent impulses to the CNS.
3. The integration center consists of one or more synapses in the CNS.
4. The motor neuron conducts the efferent impulses from the integration center to an effector organ.
5. The effector, muscle fibers or glands, respond to the efferent impulses by contracting or
secreting a product, respectively.

Know the differences between Monosynaptic and Polysynaptic reflexes (see figure 22.2
& 22.3).

Know the two large groups of Reflexes and discuss the various types of reflex activities
from each (see pages 323-327).
Somatic Reflexes
Spinal reflex
Stretch reflex
patellar reflex
achilles reflex
Crossed Extensor reflex
Superficial cord reflex
plantar reflex
Cranial Nerve reflex
corneal reflex
gag reflex

Autonomic Reflexes
Pupillary reflex
pupillary light reflex
consensual reflex
Ciliospinal reflex
Salivary reflex
