Drawing

a Lewis Dot Structure

Chem I

Draw the Lewis structure for iodomethane, CH3I

1. Determine the type and number of atoms in the molecule.

1 carbon atom, 3 hydrogen atoms, and 1 iodine atom

2. Write the electron-do notation for each type of atom in the molecule.

3. Determine the total number of valence electrons available in the atoms to be
counted.

C
1 x 4e- = 4e-
I
1 x 7e- = 7e-
3H 3 x 1e- = 3e-

14e-

4. Arrange the atoms to form a skeleton structure for the molecule. If carbon is
present, it is the central atom. Otherwise, the least-electronegative atom is
central (except hydrogen). Then connect the atoms by electron-pair bonds.

5. Add unshared pairs of electrons to each nonmetal atom (except hydrogen)
such that each is surrounded by eight electrons.

6. Count the electrons in the structure to be sure that the number of valence
electrons used equals the number available. Be sure the central atom and
other atoms besides hydrogen have an octet.

Now you try. Draw lewis dot structures for the following molecules:

H2O
CO2
CH4
C2H2
C2H4
CS2
CCl4
HF
