Find the Fourier series for (periodic extension of)

t (t 1)
t (1 t )

f(t)=

If

1 t 0

0 t 1
Hence find the Fourier series of the following periodic functions:

From the results comment on the effect of differentiability and continuity of any function on the rate
of convergence of its Fourier series.

2.
(a) If

y1 = sin(x)

is the particular solution of the differential equation

dy 2cos 2 (x) - sin 2 (x)+ y 2

=
dx
2cos(x)

then solve the equation for initial condition

y (0) = 1

(b) Solve the system of differential equations where D denotes regular differential operator.

(2 D 1) x (D 2) y sin(t )
(3D 1) x (3D 5) y cos(t )

3. A very thin sheet of metal coincides with the square in the xy plane whose vertices are the points (0,0)
(1,0), (1,1) and (0,1). The upper and lower faces of the sheet are perfectly insulated, so that heat flow in
the sheet is purely two-dimensional. Initially, the temperature distribution in the sheet is u(x,y,0) = f(x,y),
where f(x,y) is a known function. If there are no sources of heat in the sheet, find the temperature at any
point at any subsequent time, given that the edges parallel to the x axis are perfectly insulated and that the
edges parallel to the y axis are maintained at the constant temperature 0 0C. Given the two-dimensional
form of heat equation as:

2u 2 u
u
2 a2
