Fashion Styles

Give each participant a set of the 13 fashion styles pages.

The various parts of a garment can be designed in different ways. Today well
learn the names of these basic styles.
The neckline is the area around the neck and shoulders. There are 12 basic styles
of necklines.
A collar is a separate piece of fabric that is attached to the neckline. It may be
sewn to the neckline or it may be detachable. There are 19 basic styles of collars.
Sleeves began as fabric that was draped off the shoulder. There are more than 25
different styles of sleeves.
Dress styles are divided into those that have a waistline and those that do not.
There are 12 basic styles of dresses.
There are many styles of shirts for both men and women. A shirt is a top that
is more tailored than a blouse, but shirts and blouses fall into the same basic
garment category when it comes to design. There are 12 basic styles of shirts.
A skirt is a separate garment that can be worn with any shirt, blouse or other
kind of top. There are 12 basic styles of skirts. There are at least 11 different
skirt lengths (some may say more).
Pants styles may vary in length and width. There are eight recognized lengths
(some may say more), with ten basic styles.
Jackets and coats may be single- or double-breasted, or they may be in the form
of a vest. There are 20 basic styles of jackets and coats.

Fashion Styles

Activity 1: Fashion Finders

Have the young people work in groups of two or three. Assign each group
a different set of fashion styles. They are to find three to five examples of
these styles in magazines, cut out the pictures, glue them onto plain paper,
and write the name of the style beside each picture. At the end of the
activity, have the groups report on what they found.
Discussion questions:
Were some styles difficult to find? Which ones?
Were some styles much easier to find? Which ones?
Does the season affect the availability of some styles?

Activity 2: Word Search Puzzles

Give each participant a copy of each of the three puzzles to complete.
