COOLING SYSTEM

Check and Replacement of Engine Coolant

CHECK AND REPLACEMENT OF

ENGINE COOLANT
1.

CHECK ENGINE COOLANT LEVEL AT RESERVOIR TANK

The coolant level should be between the COLD and LEVEL lines at normal temperature. (20C, 68F)
If low, check for leaks and add coolant up to the upper
(COLD) level line.
HINT: If the coolant temperature is higher than normal temperature, the coolant level should be higher than upper level
line.

2.

CHECK ENGINE COOLANT QUALITY

There should not be any excessive deposits of rust or scales
around the reservoir tank cap or radiator filler hole, and the
coolant should be free from oil.
If excessively dirty, clean the coolant passages and replace
the coolant.

3.

REPLACE ENGINE COOLANT

(a) Remove the reservoir tank cap.
CAUTION: To avoid the danger of being burned, do not
remove the cap while the engine and radiator are still hot.
Scalding fluid and steam can be blown out under pressure.
(b) Remove the filler plug from the water inlet housing.

(c) Drain the coolant from the radiator and engine drain
cocks.
(d) Clean the coolant passages.
(e) Close the drain cocks.
Torque (Engine drain cock):
25 Nm (250 kgfcm, 18 ftlbf)

(f)

Following the procedure shown below, open the water

valve of the heater.
(1) Ignition SW ON
(2) A/C Blower Motor ON
(3) Using the A/C Temp. Control Button, raise the set
temp. to the highest temp.

(4) Check that the lever of the water valve is in the position shown in the illustration.

(g) Slowly add coolant to the water inlet housing until it is

full.
Use a good brand of ethyleneglycol base coolant
mixed according to the manufacturers directions.
More than 50% ethyleneglycol solution (But not more
than 70 %) is recommended.
NOTICE: Do not top up with water only.

(h) Install a new gasket and tighten the plug of the water
inlet housing.
Torque: 44 Nm (450 kgfcm, 33 ftlbf)

(i) Slowly add coolant to the reservoir tank.

HINT: The coolant level in the reservoir tank will drop after a
while. Keep adding coolant until the coolant level no longer
drops.

(j)

While the engine is idling (for at least 10 mins.), add

coolant (approx. 4 liters) up to the reservoir tank inlet to
just below the overflow pipe. Securely tighten the
reservoir tank cap.
(k) Stop the engine after racing it for five minutes at
2,0003,000 rpm.
(l) After the coolant drops, remove the reservoir tank cap
and add coolant up to the reservoir tank inlet to just
below the overflow pipe. Securely tighten the reservoir
tank cap.
Capacity (w/ Heater):
10.6 liters (11.2 US qts, 9.3 Imp. qts)

(m) Check for leaks.
