QUESTION

Water needs to be pumped from a low lying reservoir to a higher lying reservoir.
The difference between the levels of the reservoirs is 20 m and a pump is located 10 m below
the upper reservoirs water level. It is decided to use 101 mm diameter galvanized iron pipes to
convey the fluid to the upper reservoir. Due to the geographical layout of the surrounding area
it is necessary to install (4x) long radius 90 flanged bends and (3x) regular 90 flanged bends.
At pipe inlet from the lower reservoir a butterfly valve is installed which can only open to 60.
At the entrance to the upper reservoir another butterfly valve is installed which can open 90.
It is further decided to install (2x) fully open gate valves on either side of the pump so that
maintenance and repairs can be done. The total length of the pipe from the lower reservoir to
the pump is 110 m and from the pump to the upper reservoir 1.94 km. The desired flow rate is
120 l/min and the water temperature is 30C. ( = 995.7 kg/m3, = 0.801 x 10-3 kg/m.s) (All
losses must be taken into account)
Calculate:
2.1
The total head that must be overcome to pump the fluid to the upper reservoir?
2.2
If the pump is 60% efficient, how much Power is needed to pump the fluid?
