SIGN CONVENTIONS

To indicate directions of vector quantities, (velocity, displacement and

acceleration), a plus or minus sign is used.

UP is POSITIVE

DOWN is NEGATIVE

The acceleration due to gravity g will always take a negative sign.

PROJECTILES

A projectile is an object or a body thrown with an initial velocity and whose

motion is influenced by the pull of gravity.

Projectile motion has 2 components:

a) horizontal
b) vertical

Projectile Motion

When analyzing projectile motion, consider it to be the superposition of two

motions:

Constant-velocity motion in the horizontal direction

Free-fall motion in the vertical direction

The horizontal and vertical components of a projectiles motion are

completely independent of each other; time t is the common variable for
both components.
