The Board of Engineers Malaysia is introducing a mandatory Continuing Professional Development (CPD) program for all professional engineers starting in 2004. Engineers will need to complete an average of 50 hours of CPD activities per year over a three year period to renew their practicing certificate. For 2003, participation in CPD is voluntary, with engineers encouraged to participate according to the Board's CPD policy and submit their CPD records with their practicing certificate renewal application. Starting in 2004, CPD will be mandatory for practicing engineers to maintain their registration with the Board of Engineers Malaysia.

PROFESSIONAL ENGINEERS We wish to inform you that the Board will be introducing a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) program for professional engineers in line with the emerging global trend towards promoting and ensuring their competency. It is therefore extremely important that all engineers be committed to their own CPD so that they could face these ever changing engineering challenges and at the same time take advantage of opportunities that may arise. The Board plans to make participation in CPD activities a mandatory requirement for the renewal of practicing certificate (PC) for the year 2004 onwards. In order to renew a PC for the year 2005, a PE will be required to chalk up an average of 50 hours per year over the next three year period. For the coming year, the Board would be implementing a voluntary CPD program. In this voluntary program, PEs are urged to participate in CPD activities in accordance with the Boards Policy on the CPD. Details of this Policy shall be obtainable from BEM. At the end of the voluntary period, you could submit your CPD records to the Board together with your application for renewal of your PC for the year 2003. Continuing Professional Development is for all Professional Engineers and is to be on a voluntary basis for the first two(2) years and mandatory thereafter, in which, every practicing Professional Engineer must submit his CPD records together with his application for renewal of registration with the Board of Engineers Malaysia.
