Hebrews 11:1-12:2
By Faith
Prayers for Mary Ann Edwards,
Nancy Edwards &
the Everett family

God calls us to step apart from the

flurry of Doing to allow our hearts
the time and space to reflect and
be grateful.

Conscious of Our Treasures

The playwright Thornton Wilder
once wrote, We can only be
said to be alive in those moments
when our hearts are conscious of
their treasures. Those moments
when we stand aside and allow
ourselves to see what is before us
and
say
Thank-you:
those
moments are what make our
lives meaningful. Gratefulness
has a way of putting things in
perspective. What is important?
What is it that makes us feel
alive? The heart of prayer, the
heart of our worship is this
gratefulness, when we stand
aside for an hour and allow our
hearts to be conscious of the
treasures God has given us. And
chief among those treasures is
Gods own self. God so loved
the world, that God gave
what? God gave Godself. To us.
Sunday worship is nothing more
or less than being conscious,
being
grateful
of
this
extraordinary gift of God, who
gives us Godself, who gives us
ourselves. For an hour a week,

And September? September is

when we come back from
whatever it is weve been doing to
resume our habit of weekly
gratefulness! Church school starts
on Sept. 13 (as do sports and work
and studies and a thousand other
important things!): for an hour a
week, can we carve out space to
come before God and be
conscious of our treasures?
Blessings!
Pastor Hawkins

WHY GO TO CHURCH ANYWAY?

We need places to pray as if
someone were listening, to study as
if we might learn something worth
writing on our hearts, to join with
others in service as if the world
might be transformed. Churches are
places to learn to practice, with
others, a continual conversion of
life, a permanent openness to
change.

ADULT BIBLE STUDY resumes

Tuesday, Sept. 8, 9:30 AM
HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED WHAT IT MEANS WHEN JESUS
IS CALLED THE SON OF GOD? This year, the Adult Bible
Study will be delving into ancient archaeology and
culture in the time of Jesus. Well be using The Challenge
of Jesus by renowned scholar Dr. John Dominic Crossan,
one of the most challenging scholars of our day. This is the
summation of his lifes work, developed into four themes:
The World of Jesus, the Life of Jesus, The Death of Jesus,
and the Resurrection of Jesus.
For example in the first session, before Jesus ever started
His ministry, the Roman Emperors were called The Savior
of the World and The Son of God. They also called
themselves The Prince of Peace, but their idea of how
peace would be achieved was by conquering the world.
Their motto was Peace through Military Victory. When
Jesus comes on the scene, these imperial titles are taken
over by Him. Why? What does it mean when the titles of
the Roman Imperial Theology are taken from Caesar and
given to Jesus instead?
The material is absolutely fascinating, and will open your
eyes to the Bible as theyve never been opened before!
Please join us: No Bible experience necessary; just a
curious mind. We meet every Tuesday from 9:30-10:45am
in the Community Room and we even serve coffee!

Join the FABULOUS EUCC Choir...

...rehearsals begin Sunday, August 30 at 8 AM!
Its that time of the year
again! The choir will be
resuming
rehearsals
soon! Have you ever
been sitting in your seat
and caught yourself
thinking, I love to sing,
maybe I should join the
choir?
Wellcome give it a
try. We are a fun
bunch of people who
all have three things in
common; love for God,
love of music and a sense of humor (mostly to put up with
our director). Practices are short and sweet. They usually
last one hour. We will be alternating practices between
before and after church on Sunday mornings. You
already have to be here for church, so why not come
early or stay late and join in the fun. Rehearsals will begin
SUNDAY, AUGUST 30th at 8am. You are welcome to join us
anytime throughout the year if you cannot join us right
away. We hope to add your voice to the choir this
season!
Psalm 147 Praise the LORD. How good it is to sing praises
to our God, how pleasant and fitting to praise him!

ORDER SCRIP ON September 13th

Due to the Labor Day weekend, SCRIP orders

are being taken a week later than normal.
Place your orders with Laurie Buckett- they
will be delivered to you the following Sunday.
SCRIP cards are available for purchases of
gas, groceries, big-box stores and most anything you can
imagine. You pay face value for the cards and
Emmanuel retains a percentage of each purchase. Its
an easy way to give the church a financial helping hand!
Pastor Nansi uses gift cards to help out those in need with
gas and groceries ($20-$25 increments), so if you can
spare a few more dollars, dont forget her Care Fund
Ministry.

Ben Lui, Megan Alaimo and Katelyn Alaimo all attended

church camp this summer- Ben went to Moon Beach and
Megan & Katelyn attended Pilgrim Center....heres what
Megan and Katelyn have to say about their
experiences....
Megan and Katelyn went to MADD Camp (Music, Art,
Dance and Drama) the end of July...
Megan Alaimo:
When I arrived at the Pilgrim Center, I was pretty nervous,
I had no idea what we were going to do, if I was going to
make new friends or if this camp was going to be any
fun. The only thing I knew was that I had to stay in a

cabin, in the middle of the woods, without my family

around, for a week. After a little while though, all of my
worries vanished. I made new friends, the food was
AMAZING and camp was AWESOME. Some of the
activities there were pretty cool, my favorite activity was
kayaking! I was taught many new things, too, like candle
making, song-writing, how to kayak and how to weave a
basket! Camp was so exciting I forgot how much I missed
home! But, I did cry on the last full day of camp, not
because I missed home... it was because I didnt want to
leave!
Katelyn Alaimo:
Camp has fun games and activities. The week goes by
so fast you want to stay.
At Pilgrim Center the adults always make you joyful.
I Made so many crafts and met a lot of nice people.
Pilgrim Center was so fun. I can't wait until next year!

The Campital Campaign is a special fundraising

campaign initiated by the WI Conference UCC in support
of the states outdoor ministry programs, i.e. Pilgrim
Center and Moon Beach camps.
As of July 27th, the total pledged to the campaign statewide is $2,139,643 toward their minimum goal of
$3,000,000. Emmanuelites have pledged $8,581 toward
the campaign- THANK YOU!
Welcome one another, therefore, just
as Christ has welcomed you, for the
glory of God. - Romans 15:7
Jesus didn't turn people away; neither
do we. When you're gutsy enough to
make such a claim, it's not always easy
to make good on it. Following Jesus' lead, the United
Church of Christ strives to keep doors open to all.
Our welcome embraces both those in our congregations
and those outside the church, with whom we work for
God's justice and compassion. Who is welcome? -God's
children of different cultures, races, genders, ages, sexual
orientations,
abilities,
economic
situations,
and
theological traditions. It isn't always easy to be so open.
Each UCC congregation prayerfully discerns and
expresses how wide their doors and arms are open.
Some state it this way, We are a multicultural and
multiracial, open and affirming, accessible to all, and just
peace church.
The foundation for this work is the gracious gift of love,
freedom and justice given to us by God. In covenant
with one another, we are called to seek a deeper
beloved community. By inviting others to share in the
reconciling work of God in the world we invite them into
discipleship with Christ. We join faith with hospitality as
bold people of God's welcome.

MISSION & OUTREACH

individual and then another individual to make the village first.

Singing Bowl
Beginning in September, Social Concerns,
through our Singing Bowl donations, will
be advocating for another Milwaukee
project-Repairers of the Breach, located
on 13th and Vliet. An area of extreme poverty, this
building offers the only daytime refuge for the homeless
and a walk-in clinic. Here the homeless, themselves, with
nurturing and direction, govern the center, creating an
atmosphere of dignity, respect and understanding.
Their Mission Statement:"To bring forth homeless people
to act collectively to change present conditions under
which they live, through advocacy, education and direct
action."
The center is open Monday through Saturday, 7 to 4.
Individual counseling, support groups, family reunification,
substance abuse treatment and housing allows 3-5
persons to leave the center per week. However, 70-110
persons a day enter the facility.

The two new families:

Family #1
Helen (40) and her two sons, Aiden and Xavier (7 and 8)
Both go to school in Mukwonago.
Helen does not have a car, so they will be using the van.
Family #2
Jamie (38) and her 4 month old daughter Phoebe
Jamie has a car, and will be using it when her work
schedule requires her to.

Our next rotation for hosting is Oct. 25th. -Nov. 1

MISSIONS OF EMMANUEL
Family Promise of Western Waukesha County

August 2 - 9 was the first week for Family Promise not to

have any families but at the Day Center, Mariah and
Debbie, the case worker, were busy taking phone calls
from potential guests and program inquiries. This kept us
in a "ready to spring into action" position all week but
it was all good news. Two families moved into
apartments. Two new families found shelter at Christ the
King the second week in August. Other organizations and
families know about our program and are referring
families which is creating a good community connection.
Thank you to all the volunteers from Emmanuel, St. Mary's
and St. Bruno's for being so patient, flexible and
understanding during the week. With phone calls and
updates we were able to effectively navigate and
manage the needs for all involved!

HUNGER KNOWS NO SEASON...

Sharon
Perez,
who
faithfully takes our food
pantry donations in each
month is reporting that the
donation receptacle has
been very light in recent
months.
Emmanuel
designates the first Sunday
of each month as Food
Pantry Sunday. Please remember to bring some nonperishable food items each month. Our donations go to
the Kettle Moraine Food Pantry which is located just south
of Wales. Thank you.

Then the righteous will answer him, Lord, when did

we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give
you something to drink? When did we see you a
stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and
clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison
and go to visit you?

The King will reply, Truly I tell you, whatever you

did for the least of my brothers and sisters, you did
for me.
A pastor transformed himself into a homeless person and
went to the church that he was to be introduced as the
head pastor at that morning. He walked around his soon
to be church for 30 minutes while it was filling with people
for service. Only 3 people said hello to him, most looked
the other way. He asked people for change to buy food
because he was hungry. Not one gave him anything.
He went into the sanctuary to sit down in the front of the
church and was told by the ushers that he would need to
get up and go sit n the back of the church. He said hello
to people as they walked in but was greeted with cold
stares and dirty looks from people looking down on him
and judging him.
He sat in the back of the church and listened to the
church announcements for the week. He listened as new
visitors were welcomed into the church that morning but
no one acknowledged that he was new. He watched
people around him continue to look his way with stares
that said you are not welcome here.
Then the elders of the church went to the podium to
make the announcement. They said they were excited to
introduce the new pastor of the church to the
congregation. "We would like to introduce you to our
new Pastor." The congregation stood up and looked
around clapping with joy and anticipation. The homeless
man sitting in the back stood up and started walking
down the aisle.

That's when all the clapping stopped and the church was

silent. With all eyes on him....he walked up the altar and

reached for the microphone. He stood there for a
moment and then recited so elegantly, a verse from the
bible.....
Then the King will say to those on his right, Come, you
who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the
kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the
world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to
eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I
was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes
and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me,
I was in prison and you came to visit me. Then the
righteous will answer him, Lord, when did we see you
hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something
to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you
in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see
you sick or in prison and go to visit you?
The King will reply, Truly I tell you, whatever you did for
the least of my brothers and sisters, you did for me.
After he recited this, he introduced himself as their new
pastor and told the congregation what he had
experienced that morning. Many began to cry and bow
their heads in shame. "Today I see a gathering of people
here but I do not see a church of Jesus. The world has
enough people that look the other way. What the world
needs is disciples of Jesus that can follow this teachings
and live as he did. When will YOU decide to become
disciples?
He then dismissed service until the following Sunday as his
sermon had been given.
