You told them to stop wasting natural gas on public lands. Since 2006, taxpayers have lost over $380 million in royalties from oil and gas companies flaring, venting, and leaking natural gas extracted from public lands. Senators Udall and Heinrich and Representatives Lujan and Lujan Grisham called on the Bureau of Land Management to require companies to use existing technologies to stop the waste and start paying royalties to taxpayers for the natural gas extracted from public lands. New Mexicans appreciate their efforts to protect tax dollars and natural resources.

REPRESENTATIVES LUJAN & LUJAN GRISHAM FROM: NEW MEXICO TAXPAYERS SUBJECT: THANK YOU FOR FIGHTING FOR NEW MEXICO
You told them to stop.
New Mexicans and Americans everywhere owe you a debt of gratitude for standing up and calling on the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to put an end to natural gas waste on our public lands. Oil and gas companies that drill on federal land have to pay royalties on the gas they produce to compensate the public for extracting our resources. But when they waste that natural gas, through flaring, venting and leaks, they pay no royalties, leaving taxpayers with the short end of the stick. Since 2006, American taxpayers have lost more than $380 million in royalties because of wasteful practices by oil and gas companies on public lands or because companies used our public resources free of charge. The Bureau of Land Management can help stop the waste and start paying taxpayers by requiring operators to use existing technologies and proven practices to produce oil and gas more efficiently. An overwhelming, bipartisan majority of New Mexicans agree: We must end natural gas waste on our public lands. New Mexicans stand behind your efforts to protect our energy, our tax dollars, our health, and our security. Thank you for fighting for us.
