American taxpayers have lost over $380 million since 2006 because oil and gas companies drilling on federal land have been wasting natural gas resources through venting, flaring, and leaks without paying royalties. The document urges Senators Bennet and Gardner to tell the Bureau of Land Management to adopt rules like Colorado's to require companies to use existing technologies to stop wasting natural gas and start paying taxpayers the royalties owed for extracting public resources.

FROM: COLORADO TAXPAYERS SUBJECT: STOP THE TAXPAYER RIP-OFF. DONT LET THEM WASTE OUR NATURAL GAS.
Make them stop.
Oil and gas companies that drill on federal land have to pay royalties on the gas they produce to compensate the public for extracting our resources. But when they waste that natural gas, through flaring, venting and leaks, they pay no royalties, leaving taxpayers with the short end of the stick. Since 2006, American taxpayers have lost more than $380 million in royalties because of wasteful practices by oil and gas companies on public lands or because companies used our public resources free of charge. Colorado alone lost millions of dollars that would have gone to state and local governments. The Bureau of Land Management can help stop the waste and start paying taxpayers by requiring operators to use existing technologies and proven practices to produce oil and gas more efficiently. Colorado has already taken important steps to crack down on wasteful oil and gas operations. It is time the BLM followed suit. An overwhelming, bipartisan majority of Coloradans agree: We must end natural gas waste on our public lands. Please tell the BLM to follow Colorados lead and adopt common sense rules to stop wasting our tax dollars and put American Energy to good use.
