Language Arts with Mrs. Simpson!

Meet Mrs. Simpson

!

I am so excited about the opportunity to be your

Language Arts teacher this school year! It's going
to be a phenomenal year! I am a proud graduate of
North Carolina State University. However, I am a
HUGE Tarheel fan (Go HEELS!). At NC State, I
majored in Middle School Language Arts and
Social Studies and upon graduating, I started my
professional career teaching 6th grade Language
Arts here in Charlotte. This school year I start my
18th year as a teacher and I love it more and more
each year! When I am not teaching or preparing to
teach, I love to spend time with my family. I am
married to my best friend, Tyron and weve been
blessed with two wonderful daughters; Kennedy,
who is a 7th grader at Ridge Road, and Taylor who
is a 3rd grader at Highland Creek. We are also
blessed to have Gracie, our very energetic and
spoiled Maltese, as a part of our family. These
three keep me busy! I also spend a lot of my spare
time reading, running, and shopping!

Course Purpose, Goals, and Objectives

My main purpose a ELA teacher is to create and

nurture passionate, habitual, critical, and lifelong
readers! Language Arts is a critical course for
academic success. The components of reading,
writing, speaking, listening, and grammar span all
academic subject areas. The goal of this course is
for all students to develop mastery of the 6th
Grade Common Core Standard. To achieve this
goal, students will critically read a variety of texts,
write argumentative, expressive, and informative
responses, expand vocabulary, and engage in
public speaking.

Mastery Concept at RRMS

1 Students who fail to score at least a 79% on an
assessment (major tests or formal assessments) will have
the opportunity to retake the assessment.
2 Students will have opportunities during the school day
and/or before/after school to gain the deficit knowledge
necessary to demonstrate mastery when the assessment
is readministered.
3 The retest will cover the same content material, but will
not necessarily be identical to the original test.
4 The retest score obtained may be higher than 79%, but
the grade entered into the gradebook
(Powerschool) will not reflect anything higher than 79% for
a retest score. For example, if the first score is 68% and
the second score is 90%, then the final gradebook score
will be 79%.
Grading
:
Grades are based on 65% formal assessments
and 35% informal assessments.
A=90-100
B=80-89
C=70-79
D=60-69
F=59 or below

Class Supplies
One binder (1 inch)
One spiral notebook
One two pocket folder (with punched holes; no
prongs)
One pencil pouch to keep in binder
Set of earbuds/headphones

Homework
I typically have two standard homework
assignments in Language Arts:
Article of the Week Reflection
Read novel of choice on a regular basis

I will provide more specific information about

homework during Back to School night.
Late Work:
If a student is in class, but fails to turn
in assignment that was due that day, he/she can
turn the assignment in late. Late assignments lose
10 points per day. After 5 school days, a late
assignment will receive a score of no higher than a
50%. When students are absent, they have 5 days
to turn in any missed work for full credit; after the
5th day, it is late and points will be deducted off
the grade.

Parent/Teacher Communication

DonorsChoose

Parent/Teacher communication is extremely

important to me. I believe that it is a key factor in
a childs success in my class. As a result, I am
asking that you complete a google form with your
contact information so that I can stay connected
with you.

I have been fortunate to get a lot of grants funded

for classroom supplies through this AMAZING site.
Right now, I have a few grant requests up that are
in need of some love! Please take a look at the
site and consider making a small, tax-deductible
donation towards one of my grants! My scholars
and I would greatly appreciate it!
