Practices (in A109 & A118): You must attend a 1 hour session each week.
At practice you work with a coach or peer coach in 20-30 minute blocks, then practice by yourself using what you just worked on.
Those doing debate, extemp, radio, or oratory will be doing their research as well.

Speech Events:
Drama: monologues and dramatic performances from full plays, one-acts, and prose. Memorized. 1 performer.
Humor: humorous monologues and performances from plays, one-acts, and prose. Memorized. 1 perf.
Prose: the art of storytelling and reading aloud using prose, essays, etc. Scripted. ! performer.
Poetry: stylistic reading of a poem or collection of poems
Duo Performances: dramatic performances using cuttings from plays, one-acts,& prose. Mem or scr. 2 perfs.
Original Performances: performance of your own piece, either scripted or memorized with 1 or 2 performers.
Radio: Radio broadcasting of news, sports, on the spot, editorials, commercials
Extemp Speaking: For the essay writing. This is a performed position speech on a current news event.
Impromtu Speaking: you get 30 secs. to create a 5 min. speech on a topic you are given. This one is a rush.
Congress: Parliamentary debate this is debate on a lighter scale, And you pretend to care about the issue.
Oratory: Traditional speech. You perform a speech written by you or another (this is called declamation).
Debate Events:
Congress: debate like they do in the Senate or House of Representatives
Lincoln-Douglas: Based on the famous debates of Abraham Lincoln & Stephen Douglas where two debaters go head to head in
fierce discussion over an issue.
Public Forum: A team of two debaters go against another team of two over an issue in a more informal setting.
Policy Debate: A team of two debaters against another team engage in structured debate over an issue that does not change
over the course of the season.

Debate Topics:
Congress: There will be a set of bills that you will research and prepare speeches for. The bills being discussed will be released
for each meet.
Lincoln-Douglas: The topic changes bi-monthly. The September/October topic is
Resolved: Adolescents ought to have the right to make autonomous medical choices
Public Forum: The topic changes every month. The October topic is
Resolved: The United States Federal Government ought to pay reparations to African-Americans.
Policy: The topic does not change for the entire season. The 2015/2016 topic is
Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially curtail its domestic surveillance.

Costs
$30.00 for our dues by the first meet. You will not compete if not paid. This covers our operating costs for the year (paper,
scripts, stationery, pens)
$15.00 (in addition to annual dues) for new members for NFL dues
$5.00 for a speech binder

We will be offering shirts this year. Orders and money are due by Friday September 12 in order to have the shirts back in time
for our first meet. Make checks out to EMHS. Shirts are red with a yellow bow tie, black suspenders, and white and black writing.

High School. Membership is open to everyone, regardless of perceived speaking ability.
